Udh Project: One of two Darrian research
projects charged with investigating irregularities in the energy
output of Tarnis. Its chosen method was to analyze the interior of
the star by measuring the interference of two intersecting meson
beams. One beam was projected from Darrian itself while the other
was projected from a reasearch laboratory on Telaret, a moon af the
gas giant Leryin in orbit 4 of the system. The project achieved
some interesting preliminary results, but was terminated when the
Maghiz struck. -ld D

standardized alphabet. -ld D
Udipeni (2316 Massilia B687ACA-E): The
Rebellion has yet to really reach Udipeni, which remains aligned
with Margaret. Though beautiful and varied, Udipeni would not have
its present volume of traffic and tourism were it not for the
Iilodav Music Festival. Performers and performing groups come from
all over Margaret's realm to study and perform here.
Hallow's performance facilities are superb,
and the Meinel Conservatory has a libraryof music that many claim
is unequaled within the Imperium. The range of compositions that
can be heard here includes selections from the ancient Kilatis' of
Baarid Garuud, and the Ciaconas and Fugues of Dietrich Buxtehude,
the most modern compositions of Bran Ralu, Eafeahkhail Eeskha, and
Robin Garcia. There are even occasional performances of the music
and drama of Droyne, Hiver, Vargr, and non-Imperial Aslan cultures.

UFIC: Uniform Fiscal Identification Code.
Classification prefix adopted in -2453 by the Terran Navy for the
identification and classification of electronic components. Use
discontinued in -2218.
Ulane: A minor race of the Earle subsector,
who received a few jump-capable ships from the Aslan about 800
Aslan (-1385 Imperial). They originated as flying quadrupeds, but
their wings are now vestigial, converted to manipulative digits.
The Ulane are less than one meter long, hollow-boned and delicate.
Their diet consists primarily of fruit, since they require a lot of
sugar to sustain their high body temperatures and activity levels.
Small animals and insects provide protein. Ulane are adapted to
warm climates, but are able to build dwellings that enable them to
live anywhere - although they seldom prefer to.
The Ulane social structure is built on clans
of related families, so that when the Aslan contacted them, the
Ulane decided to emulate their benefactors and model their society
along Aslan lines. To the Aslan, this attempt has met with only
moderate success. Ulane are not at all combative, and their ideas
of honor puzzle the Aslan exceedingly. The hierarchy of clan and
family dominance was decided by vote shortly after contact, and can
be changed the same way, rather than by competition and combat.
Still, the structure is useful to the Ulane.
Ulane prefer to live in very small, scattered
towns. Most of their worlds have less than one million population
owing to the low birthrate and need for large foraging territories.
A larger population on a Ulane world indicates that another race
lives there also, usually in a non-competing niche.
With their few ships, the Ulane explored a
number of worlds in their own subsector and coreward into Reaver's
Deep Sector. However, they found most worlds less hospitable than
their homeworld of Ul (0603 A682698-6). Since they could neither
build nor maintain the ships on their own, Ulane expansion soon
stopped and the Aslan expansion flowed on around them.
On some worlds Aslan and Ulane live together
cooperatively. The Ulane are known for artistic rather than
technological endeavors, and it is these that the Aslan prize when
trading with them. -dn TD 17
Umaraag (2631 Corridor C4698CC-B): The IISS
base at Umaraag has begun legal proceedings against the Naval base
at Sumeszu (2632 Corridor).
Naval medics from nearby Sumeszu took 120
Chirpers for research purposes from a reservation on Umaraag, where
chirpers comprise over 60% of the population. Scout personnel
maintained that such action violated the laws protecting the
reservation and the chirpers' right to live unmolested.
Initial rulings in 1114 favored the Navy, and
the Scouts subsequently appealed the decision. The policies of "the real Strephon", favoring equal treatment of both natural and
artificial sophonts, offer a new source of hope for the IISS. -cor TD 18
United Followers of Augurgh: Vargr state in
Tuglikki. Before 1116, the UFA was a political neutral. Although
not openly supportive of the Imperium, the two states quietly
conducted a substantial amount of trade. Then came the collapse of
Corridor, and the situation changed.
Outwardly, the UFA still continues to claim
neutrality toward Deneb. At the same time, it secretly funds and
equips covert raiding missions against rich border targets. When
the opportunity arises, the UFA has even moved in to fill the power
vacuum - it has annexed several worlds along the Denebian border,
under the guise of "assuring the peace of the local populations".

Urzaeng: Language and cultural region in the
Vargr Extents. Includes Fa Dzaets and Gzaekfueg, and reaches into
Meshan. This region halos the coreward end of the Windhorn Rift.
This region came into being when Vargr rounded the rift during the
Vargr Pillaging (-2400 to -1700). Expansion of the Urzaeng into the
Imperial territories was not as deep because of the wars with the
Second Empire of Gashikan.
The Urzaeng have a propensity for violence
and a disdain for weakness. Runts, elderly, and chronically ill are
usually collected into separate communities. Someone with a
temporary illness is wise to seclude himself from the public until
he recovers.
Urzaeng are also known for being very
territorial and protective of their space. Their trading ships are
particularly wide ranging and are marked for their spaciousness:
double occupancy staterooms are almost unheard of. -cul V&V
Usuti: Born in 558, proclaimed emperor by the
Moot after defeating Jaqueline II in the Second Battle of Araloine
(619), killed in battle in 620. -emp IE
Uthith Fleet: Fleet of the Ekhlle Ksafi (40th
Squadron) based at Uthith (2703 Gvurrdon). During the Fifth
Frontier War, it occupied Yorbund (2403 Spinward Marches) and Heya
(2404 Spinward Marches), but did not press further, spending much
time mopping up and consolidating. After the Gireel Fleet was
destroyed at Beck's World, the Imperial 21 2nd Fleet forced the
Uthith Fleet back. On 252-1109, Admiral Thuekhs negotiated a
separate peace and withdrew the Uthith Fleet from Regina subsector.
Many Vargr veterans of the Heyan occupation commonly have
souvenirs, particularly bottles of fine Heyan liquors. -w&o V&V
Uush: Water scented with ashir, a berry
native to Vland. Seemingly almost non-flavored, uush takes on much
character when drunk with supi. -cam MS
